Telling Time Activities

Teaching students how to tell time is always tricky. Many students only experience seeing time on a digital clock.
Here are some ways to practice telling time that are helpful, engaging, and hands-on!

WHITEBOARDS & CLOCKS

We did this activity as a review of the last lesson, before starting a new one. I would call out a time, and students would show me either by using a clock or by writing the time correctly on the whiteboard. They switched items with their partners after each one.

This was a really quick way to assess who got it and who needed some more practice. It also kept everyone engaged and listening, and was really helpful practice.

TIME CHECK

I just love this activity! It is a genius idea from Lisa {here} and it's a freebie!
I had my students tape a Time Check strip to their desk. During the day I would randomly call out "Time Check" and students had to look at the clock and record what time it was.

I took some of the telling time cards from the freebie pack from Gina {here} and put one on each desk.

Students looked at the card on their desk and recorded what time it says on the corresponding section of their page. When they were done, they 'scooted' over to someone else's desk {whatever one was empty} and completed the card on that desk. They continued on until their page was complete.
This is exactly like completing a worksheet, but WAY more fun, and it gets them up and moving around the classroom too!
