Classroom Reveal {Part 3}

Here are just a few more areas of my classroom to share:

I love the cling numbers and write & wipe sections- this makes my life so much easier!
I created these job cards specifically with my classroom needs in mind. Every student has a number {now I don't need to make new name labels every year} and the numbers attach with Velcro to make switching them quick and simple.

Six FREE Addition Games to Practice Math Fact Fluency!

After working on number families and making sets to ten, it was time to work on addition fact fluency.
We have been doing this in many FUN and engaging ways!
This fun game is from One student is the math fact maker, the others try to figure out what the missing addend is. Students close their eyes while the fact maker hides some colored chips under the bowl and puts the rest of the chips in the open for the group to see. The others open their eyes and count the chips that are showing, then have to figure out what number is missing (is hidden under the bowl) that will add up to ten.

This amazing game is from Teaching in the Early Years. For this math game, students work in groups of 3, using a deck of cards with numbers 2-10. One player's job is to figure out the sum, the other two need to figure out the addends. Play begins with two players taking a card and holding up to their foreheads. They may look at each others' cards, but not their own. The player whose job it is to figure out the sum looks at both cards the players are holding up and mentally adds the numbers together, then announces the sum aloud. The players who are holding cards up must look at the other's card and try to figure out what card they are holding up aka the missing addends.

This game is also from Students take turns rolling 2 dice and adding the numbers together, then tracing the number that makes the sum. First one to trace ALL the numbers is the winner! Great practice for the beginning of the year, reminding students how to print the numbers properly.

This game is from First Grade Schoolbox. All you need for each group is a deck of cards {with just the number cards} and these math mats from the School Bell. Students are working together as groups to fill in the addition problems on the mats.
Look how totally engaged the entire class is!


This game is also from First Grade Schoolbox. Students choose a domino out of the box and place it on their recording sheet, copy the dot patterns, then add the 2 numbers together.

Bright Idea: Recommend a Book

One of my goals this year is to get my students to LOVE to read.
I use a LIKE sign in the classroom library so that students can recommend books to each other.
 And I want them to encourage each other to read too!

So I put this in my classroom library.
This is simply a plate holder and a Facebook 'Like' sign.

When students read a book that they've enjoyed, they can share their 'Like' with the class, to encourage others to read it too!

Daily 5: Week 2

This is my first year trying out the Daily 5, and I have to say that it is my students' FAVORITE part of the morning!

Here's what the rotations looked like during Week 2:

During Word Work, students practiced their spelling words using Spelling Sticks. This is from Regan's 'Sight Word Spelling' pack {here}'s awesome!

For 'Stick Em Up', they pulled a spelling stick out of the container, read the word, wrote the word, and wrote it along the stick on their page.

For 'Stick Sentences' they pulled a spelling stick out of the container, wrote the word on the stick on their page, then used it to write a sentence.


Students are enjoying a story from the free site Storyline Online, then filling in a response form in their Listen to Reading folder.

Students are reading 'good fit' books from the classroom library.

For this round, students are doing 'Roll, Read, and Highlight'. It is from Cara's pack {here}'s awesome! Students take turns rolling a die, reading the fluency phrase, and highlighting it. First one to finish their page wins :) 


There is a TON of choice for students in this station, including writing lists, stories, labelling, writing opinions, narratives, writing to inform, writing sticker stories, etc. 

We are LOVIN' the Daily 5!
