Favourite Pins Friday {Sight Word Learning}

Here are some pins that show fun and engaging ways for students to practice their sight words!

Students pick a sight word and then figure out what the secret code for it would be by using the keypad.
Students scour the newspaper looking for sight words, and print any they find onto this sheet.
Students read and record the sight words that flash across the screen on the digital picture frame.
Students form the sight words using PlayDoh. This is also a great way to highlight letter placement {above the line, below the line, etc.}
How fun is this? Stamp the sight word of the day/week onto your students' hands so they know what word to practice when they go home.

What I'm Lovin' Wednesday {Ideas for the Beginning of the Year}

Here are some Pinterest finds that I'm loving that are perfect for beginning of the school year learning!

Make some alphabet pointers using magnetic letters. Use them for a letter hunt around the classroom! Students have to find the letter that's on their pointer.
Print some colour words on paper bags and have students work in groups to hunt around the room for things that are that colour.
Pass a bag full of letters around the circle. When the song ends, whoever is holding the bag picks a letter and says its name. {They could also say its sound, a word that begins with that letter, etc.}
 This pin has no link to its origin...if you made it please let me know so I can give credit where credit is due :)
My students love this activity! Starting at the top, they highlight the path of uppercase & lowercase letters until they get to the bottom.
These free, customizable pages can be used to teach your students how to print their names properly. It can be part of a writing centre at the beginning of the year, or can even be sent home for extra practice!

What I'm Lovin' Wednesday! {Teacher Tips}

We're getting closer to beginning a new school year! Here are some of my favorite Teacher Tips that make life so much easier in my classroom:

When the class noise level starts to get a little loud, whack on the 'whisper bell'. The students hear the DING! and instantly stop talking and whisper together in unison "Whisper Bell". Then they go about their work quietly. Seriously works like a charm!

 I snagged this great idea from Jessica. Students have to highlight their name on their paper before they put it in the finished work paper tray. If there is no name to highlight, they know that they need to write it!

I don't know why, but students think that you need to drop everything and fix the little rip in the book they're reading. RIGHT AWAY.

When this happens, I just have them put the book into the Book Hospital, and assure them that it will get fixed up!

Another tip from Jessica. When the teacher is working with a small group she is not to be disturbed! When the teacher is wearing the tiara, it means that you may not talk to the teacher or interrupt  their small group UNLESS one of the 3 B's is occurring: you need to barf, you're bleeding, or you need to go to the bathroom.

I hung a magnetic board on the wall next to the class washroom, and added my students' pics using adhesive magnetic tape. Whenever someone needed to use the washroom, they just put their magnet on the door. This made it easy to see that the washroom was occupied, and who was in there!

I used to use this pocket chart for my students' mail. I labelled the openings with my students' names...but they could NEVER figure out which pocket of mail was theirs! They always took the mail from the one below their name...frustrating!

So I purchased these crates to use instead! They fit file folders, and I labelled the folders with my students' names.
Blue=boys' mail.
Pink=girls' mail.

Much easier! No messed up mail!
And they're stackable too!

Collaborative Class Pennant Freebie

One way to begin the school year is to talk about what your students would like to achieve. This discussion can then be turned into a fun craftivity that you can display in your classroom. It will also serve as a visual reminder of what their goals/aims/hopes are for the year!

You can download the pennant freebie {here}.

If you'd like a version where students draw self-portraits and label with their names, you can find that {here}
