Spelling Battleship {a Daily 5 Word Work Activity}

Battleship Spelling! Students try to 'sink' each other's words- a fun spelling word work activity!
Remember that fun game you used to play called Battleship? The one where you try to sink all your opponent's ships? Well during our Daily 5 Word Work time, my students have been trying to 'sink' their opponent's words by guessing where they're written on the grid!

Bright Idea: Displaying Student Work

Hate switching out bulletin boards? Here's a trick I started using this year that has made displaying student work SO much easier!
Teacher hack: a simple way to display student work throughout the entire school year!
I hot-glued thumbtacks to the back of these jeweled clothespins from Hobby Lobby.

 A simple sheet of black construction paper makes a perfect background for student work.

Reader's Theatre: Oral Reading Practice with Fluency and Expression

Punctuation is a great guide for using expression when reading aloud!
This is on our focus board. It reminds students when to sound excited, when to ask a question, and when to make a statement as they read.
Oral reading activities to practice fluency and expression using Reader's Theater!

I started by dividing the class into groups. I gave the groups their scripts, and had my students look them over.

I didn't assign the speaking parts. I let them see what would be a 'good fit' for them {too many words/not enough reading/words are too difficult/etc}.

After they chose their parts, it was time to rehearse!
