UPDATE 2016: I have created bundles of month-long literacy centers, to make things easy for Kindergarten teachers!
The packs include literacy activities in these 5 areas of learning:
1)Writing 2)Listening to reading 3) Word work (sight words) 4) Phonics/alphabet 5) Phonemic awareness
The packs are laid out, week by week, for the entire month. They include 5 stations for students to rotate through per week, with all of the components you’ll need for each activity.
Assessment tools are included to help keep learning on track and to keep your students accountable.
Learning is spiraled throughout the month, to help students build on their prior learning.

Bright Idea: When The Teacher is Busy

I am so excited to once again be part of a great link-up, where teachers share some Bright Ideas!

This tip is useful for times when you are working with a small group.

The other students are supposed to be busy with their own activities. Activities that have been explained thoroughly, that have all of the components ready to use, and that are fun and engaging and absolutely meaningful/educational.

But doesn't it just always happen that one student just needs to tell you something? {Something that can wait?}
I have found that this helps in times like those:
Teaching tip: Wear a tiara to indicate to students that you are busy with a group and cannot be disturbed!
When the teacher is wearing her tiara, it means that you may not talk to her or interrupt the small group...unless one of the 3 B's is occurring: barfing, bleeding, or a bathroom emergency.

It works people!

We Love to READ!

I recently received a set of Rozanne Lanczak Williams books from Creative Teaching Press.

Can I just tell you how EXCITED my students are?!?!
Why are they so excited? They can READ!
With all of the alphabet work, CVC practice, and sight word learning we've done, my students are stoked that they can now read. REAL reading. Recognizing the words. Enjoying stories together. This is the best part of teaching Kindergarten!

These books are so perfect for beginning readers, and I cannot express enough how amazing they are at building confidence. I love how the books build on each other, using words from one book to the next. Students can use their knowledge of sight words and picture cues. Love it!

Look how the boys just dug right in!!!

Head over {here} to check out the books!

And don't forget to enter my CTP giveaway {here} for a fantastic chalkboard style and chevron prize pack!

Spring Flowers Art Activity

Spring art activity for Kindergarten- making flowers using warm and cool colors.

Mrs. J came to lead another art lesson with us, and helped us brighten up our classroom!

She talked to the students about warm and cool colors.

Students drew a circle in the middle of their round paper, then drew some flower petals that stretched to the edge of the page. Some made their petals pointed, some were rounded, and some made theirs heart-shaped.

They did the same on a larger round page, then cut the flower shapes out.
