FREE Math Place Value Games!

Math place value activities and games for first and second grade
There are so many ways to have fun while learning about Place Value!
Here are just a few of the ways we did just that:
Place Value War

This game is played exactly like the card game War. Each student gets half of a deck of cards {using number cards only}. They each turn over a card for the tens and ones place and compare their numbers. Whoever has the highest number wins all the cards. Game continues until someone has no cards left. This was played using tens and ones, and later they played with 3 cards to make hundreds, tens, and ones. They LOVED this game!

Base 10 Blocks

A great way for the visual and the hands-on learners to see exactly what the numbers look like.

They took turns with their partners either making the numbers or showing me what the number looks like using base 10 blocks. Great practice and I can quickly and easily see who's 'got it' and who needs to work on it more :)

Students threw googly eyes onto a target, then added up their scores by tens and ones. Later we played using hundreds, tens, and ones, and finally with thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones. They LOVED this game! It's a freebie from Rachelle {here}

In this activity, students draw numbers from the tens and ones containers {later we add the hundreds, and finally the thousands containers}. They record what they've drawn in the appropriate spaces, then compare their numbers to see what the highest number and lowest numbers pulled were.
Note: This is not a free game, but is part of Reagan's wonderful Math Sticks pack {here}

Students drew cards and placed them onto the tens and ones mat. They then compared numbers to see who made the highest number.

In this activity, students rolled dice and wrote the numbers in the spaces. Then they had to show the number by making pictures of base 10 blocks. Then they wrote the number out in expanded form.

Place Value Write the Room

I taped cards with various place value pictures around the room and students had to go around and write the answers beside the correct letters. This was a great way to not only practice place value, but to get them up and moving while keeping math fun and engaging!
