Measurement Fun

We played a simple math game yesterday, that had students practicing counting, measurement, and comparing lengths...all in one activity!
Students worked in pairs. A length of yarn was placed between them.
Kindergarten measurement partner activity that includes addition and comparing lengths- just need yarn, dice, and Unifix cubes. See post for how to play!
They took turns rolling a die, then joining that many Unifix cubes together. They laid their stack beside the yarn {on their side} so they could see how close they were to the end. Of course, they also compared their stack with their friend's to compare the lengths!

Play continued back & forth until someone reached the end of the yarn. What a fun activity...and super competitive too :)

My students came up with some great answers!
We read The EARTH Book by Todd Parr.
And, combining fabulous Earth Day craftivity ideas I found on Pinterest {created by Cara Carroll and Mrs. Cupcake} we made these:

Consonants, Vowels, Names, Morning Messages!

As mentioned in earlier posts, we have been doing a lot of work with CVC words.

To futher practice consonants and vowels, we have been doing a special morning message once a week.

It incorporates my students' names, which makes it very high interest and fun!
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/EDITABLE-Class-Morning-Message-Charts-1102520
Each student gets their own copy of the name page to fill in.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/EDITABLE-Class-Morning-Message-Charts-1102520
First, we identify all of the vowels in the person's name, using this anchor chart:
Morning Message activities to practice names and vowels & consonants
You can find the anchor chart in {this} post.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/EDITABLE-Class-Morning-Message-Charts-1102520
Then we list all of the consonants.

The magnetic letters are manipulated in order to make as many words as possible with the letters in the person's name:

When we get through the entire class, the name pages will be assembled into a booklet for them to keep!

You can find an FULLY EDITABLE version of this activity and MUCH more in my Morning Message pack {here}!

CVC and Sight Word FUN

Check out these fun literacy activities my class has been loving this week:

Students start their cars on the green letter and make the letter sound. Then the car heads to the yellow letter sound, and ends at the red letter sound. Then they drive across the road, blending the sounds as they go, to make the word.

So much fun!

CVC Learning Fun

All that alphabet practice has paid off, and my students are well under way in using those letter sounds to spell lots and lots of CVC words.
Lots of great CVC activities for Kindergarten- perfect for whole group or literacy centers!
We've been using my Where's That Sound? pack {here} to identify where the sounds are in the word. Then students show the letters represented by the sounds on the chart.

It's great for practice with segmenting sounds. And it's all attached with Velcro, so it's easy for little hands to move the letters around.

We have also been using the CVC Mega Pack created by Jessica @ The Littlest Scholars.
Students help to make the CVC words using magnetic letters.

Then they did a follow-up worksheet activity.

We also play a game I call Mix It & Fix It
Lots of great CVC activities for Kindergarten- perfect for whole group or literacy centers!
I put the letters of a CVC word in random order on the magnetic board. I say the word, and students take turns coming up and making the word. I LOVE how they are stretching out the words and saying the sounds as they think aloud!!
